The religious of the hospital order of San Juan de Dios founded their church complex in this city in the year 1672.
It was repaired in 1841 in a neoclassical style, although the hospital's façade has preserved a simple baroque style.
The paintings that existed in the sacristy of the temple of the Former San Agustín Convent, now Public Library.
In the middle of the 28th century, Don Pedro de Ibarra - a prominent resident of the city - left a large amount of money and several buildings for the maintenance of the hospital, as well as the introduction of water to the establishment.
In 1860 it was decreed that the Juaninos would leave the hospital's care, and in the 20th century it became the “Dr. Gabriel García”, which subsists with other resources and is supported by a Civil Association with the same name.
The temple is distinguished by its construction in the shape of a Latin cross and its wealth of wood-carved figures of saints.
Inside the temple there were four altarpieces: the one on the main altar was made of gilded wood with a tabernacle with a door trimmed in silver, a shelf with the image of the holy father in bulk, a holy Christ of gilded bronze.
On the sides there is a crucified man, seven carved images and six paintings of the passion.
A Christ made of corn cane paste made in the 16th century and an oil painting that represents the two most important figures for this religious order are still preserved: the Pope and Saint Francis of Assisi. The access door to the cloister is one of the most beautiful Renaissance works that exist in the city.
