Vasco de Quiroga Square

It is one of the largest colonial squares in America and is surrounded by portals and beautiful colonial houses. As a curious thing in the squares of that period - only here - there is no temple in its surroundings, but private houses and buildings enclose its area.

This situation was due to the fact that the “center” (let's put it that way) in its pre-Hispanic layout was used for housing and commerce, leaving uphill the space destined for ritual and ceremonial sites, on which – as in all cities built on pre-Hispanic settlements – the temples that currently exist were later built.

The main square also has three fountains, the central one serving to display a statue of the illustrious character from whom it is named.
