The Natural History Museum of the Michoacana University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo was created in 1986 with the aim of promoting scientific reflection and establishing a bridge that would allow society to get closer to nature. In 1986, the biologist Francisco Méndez García proposed the creation of the Natural History Museum to the university authorities, finding the support of the historian Raúl Arreola Cortés, then rector of the university, the H. University Council and the State Government. In this way, and through the loan contract of one of the houses built at the end of the 19th century in the Cuauhtémoc Forest, formerly "Paseo de San Pedro", the current facilities of the "Manuel Martínez Solórzano" Natural History Museum were established, named in honor of the prominent Michoacan naturalist of the 19th century. The inauguration of the MUHNA Natural History Museum took place on December 6, 1986.

Its mission is to promote scientific knowledge of our natural environment and reflection on social responsibility in environmental issues through exhibitions and activities that emphasize different aspects of biodiversity and natural and cultural heritage, especially in the state of Michoacán.

The MUHNA is a public university space that fosters community integration around the knowledge of natural heritage, particularly in the state of Michoacán, and promotes the recognition of social responsibility in the face of environmental problems, through an innovative museological proposal that recognizes the social, cultural and educational characteristics of the environment.
