The town of Tacambaro was founded around the year 1535. Later, in 1706, Friar Francisco de Fonseca was appointed to rebuild and improve the town of Tacambaro, laying out streets, introducing water, promoting trade and obtaining land for the Spanish.
After independence was achieved in 1822, Tacámbaro was in ruins, and its inhabitants had to undertake the arduous reconstruction.
Durante la Revolución a finales de 1919, se declaró a Tacambaro, capital del Estado, siendo gobernador el Gral. Gertrudis Sánchez. Posteriormente los poderes fueron trasladados a Nocupétaro.
