Ubicación: Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro
Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro is a Purépecha town located and is the capital of the municipality of Nuevo Parangaricutiro. It is located on the Purépecha plateau, near the Paricutín volcano.
It is known as “the town that refused to die” because it was rebuilt after the Paricutín volcano destroyed it in 1943. The inhabitants who survived the eruption moved to the former Los Conejos hacienda, where they rebuilt the town.
Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro is a benchmark in community forest management, ecotourism and biodiversity conservation. The community conducts field research and inventories of the flora and fauna of local forests every five years.
The community has a communal enterprise that has improved the local economy and the well-being of the population. Communal forestry has generated jobs, improved community infrastructure and delivery services.
In Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro is the Church of the Lord of Miracles, where the Feast of the Lord of Miracles is celebrated, one of the most important religious festivals in Mexico.
According to stories, it was in the year 1597 when a traveler who was selling three Christs arrived at the town, belonging to Michoacán. He was offered lodging in the house of a parish priest, Mr. Nicolás. The guest decided to leave the 3 Christs for a while to see what happened…
