Ubicación: Erongarícuaro

It is located on the western shore of the lake, 17 km from Pátzcuaro, after Tócuaro passing through Arócutin and Uricho. Its name means “place of surveillance”.
In the past, Sundays were festive and colorful, as the barter market was held between the islanders and the mountain people, who exchanged products from the lake such as fish, birds, mats and baskets, among other things, for goods from the mountains, such as firewood, fabrics, wood for construction, fruits, vegetables, and so on.
Here, too, there are traces of Franciscanism through a temple and monastery built in the 16th century in honour of the Virgin of the Assumption, which currently functions as a seminary and can be visited. Its thick walls are made of adobe, its sober corridors are framed by arches made of rock and quarry, which give it a severe, but calm and spiritual air. In the centre there is a waterwheel with a simple curb, moulded arch and crosspiece to draw water.
After visiting this picturesque town, you can return along the same route or continue the journey around the lake and passing through several small towns to then take the free highway to Guadalajara, approximately 5 minutes from Santa Fe de la Laguna.
