In a straight line and several blocks in front of the Basilica, there is the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, whose construction responds to the architectural and unique fashion of the 19th century. It was completed in 1832 and was built by Mr. Feliciano Ramos, who came to Mexico from Havana, being a slave of a Spanish family, later obtaining his freedom due to his good conduct. He dedicated himself to commerce and muleteering, from which he obtained a considerable fortune.
To fulfill a promise made to the Virgin of Guadalupe, he ordered a sanctuary to be erected in Pátzcuaro – where he lived – in place of a chapel that had already existed since the 17th century.
On its façade and on the tower, on pedestals, you can still see 4 of the 7 sculptures it had, representing the 7 virtues. The four that are preserved are: Charity, Temperance, Fortitude and Faith.
Don Feliciano Ramos died on May 22, 1830 and his body was buried in this sanctuary in 1842, after having remained in the Basilica.
