La Tecuena

Tecuena Island is the smallest of the islands located around Lake Pátzcuaro, and is one of the small settlements that tells an ancestral history.

Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times, and it was an important place for indigenous peoples. Its name comes from the Purépecha language and means “Place of Rest.”

Its inhabitants focus on farming, fishing areas and spaces dedicated to various traditional activities and are known for faithfully maintaining their ancestral customs.

Entre las celebraciones importantes en esta isla de Tecuena está la Feast of the Souls or Night of the Dead, where they place offerings and perform rituals that reflect the Purépecha worldview and the patronal festival in honor of San Francisco, which is celebrated with dances, music and typical dishes of the region.

Next to it you can see an islet known as “La Tecuenita”.
