The original hospital, which dated back to 1534, was destroyed and the current building was built in its place in 1896, located behind the Parish of San Nicolás. During its reconstruction, both the chapel and the hospital were worked on as closely as possible to the characteristics of the original buildings.
In addition to caring for the sick, this establishment provided hospitality: shelter, education, food and care for those who needed it. The intention was for the indigenous people to acquire the Christian religion and learn trades to earn a living. The indigenous people call it huatápera, which means “meeting place.”
Next to this there is a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary; a space that surprises with its sobriety. Only the neoclassical altar of the Virgin and the beautifully painted beamed ceiling are the elements that decorate the building.
In the Hospital Chapel there are two other images of the Virgin: one is the Virgin Mary and the other is Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico.
