Former Dominican Convent of Santa Catarina (House of the eleven courtyards)

The only religious institution derived from Santo Domingo that existed in Pátzcuaro was this one. A legacy of the Dominican nuns from the mid-18th century on the site that belonged to what was the hospital of Santa Marta. This house is of great splendor.

The name “The House of the Eleven Patios” is due to the fact that it originally had 11 courtyards.

It boasts capitals, arches, strongly molded archivolts, keystones in its center and also shows a bath of great interest with a baroque style doorway, extremely rich. This bath has an incomparable value if one takes into account the scarcity of places designated for this purpose. It is of great beauty and elegance. Perhaps the most suggestive thing in Pátzcuaro. It is said that it was built for a princess who denied her reign and locked herself away in the convent.

Today, this building functions as the region's House of Crafts. Visiting it is very important if you want to admire the artisans doing their work.
