The coat of arms was granted to the city of Pátzcuaro on July 21, 1553 by Charles V King of Spain. According to the Royal Decree, it ordered that in said shield “…there be a lagoon of water of its color with a church on a rock flanked by the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul and near said lagoon, and a church, the Cathedral church.” .haya una laguna de agua de su color con una iglesia sobre un peñal flanqueada por los apóstoles San Pedro y San Pablo y cerca de dicha laguna, e iglesia, la iglesia Catedral”.
