It is located 61 kms. of Pátzcuaro.
This city is considered as the first seat of the Purhépecha race, which later would populate all that today is Michoacán, part of Guanajuato and Querétaro.
During the colony, the Spaniards constituted it a Republic of Indians and it was handed over to Hernando Jerez.
Zacapu was the center of important struggles during the War of Independence. Currently, it is an important agricultural, commercial and industrial center.
